Hydration for Tradies: Staying Hydrated Working in the Heat

If you work outdoors in Australia, you already know summer on site is brutal. Roofers, sparkies, chippies, landscapers, concreters and labourers spend long days in direct sun, often in PPE, doing physical work with no air conditioning in sight. Staying hydrated isn't just about comfort. It's part of working safely through long, hot days. Here's a practical hydration plan for tradies.

Why tradies are at risk of dehydration

  • Long hours in the heat, often starting early and finishing late
  • Heavy, physical work that makes you sweat all day
  • PPE and long sleeves that trap heat
  • Roofs, slabs and open sites that radiate heat back at you
  • Busy days where drinking gets forgotten until smoko

When you sweat, you lose water and electrolytes, mainly sodium. Dehydration can bring on tiredness, headaches, cramps and poor concentration. On a worksite, that matters.

A simple hydration plan for a day on the tools

Before work

  • Drink water with breakfast. You've gone all night without fluid.
  • On hot days, consider a drink with electrolytes before you start.
  • Fill a big bottle and pack an esky with cold drinks. If it's cold, you'll drink it.

On site

  • Drink before you're thirsty. Thirst is a late signal.
  • Little and often. A few mouthfuls every 15 to 20 minutes in the heat beats a big gulp at lunch.
  • Use every break. Smoko and lunch are your chance to refill and top up electrolytes.
  • Alternate water with a drink with electrolytes on hot days or when you're sweating heavily.
  • Look out for your crew. Remind each other to drink, and keep an eye on apprentices who don't want to stop.

After work

  • Rehydrate with fluid and sodium on the way home, before the beers.
  • Eat a proper meal; food helps replace salt too.
  • Start tomorrow hydrated. Heat builds up over consecutive days.

Know the warning signs

  • Headache, dizziness or feeling faint
  • Muscle cramps
  • Feeling unusually tired, irritable or confused
  • Dark urine or not needing the toilet all day
  • Stopping sweating in the heat

If you or a workmate feels unwell in the heat, stop work, get into the shade, cool down and seek help. Follow your site's heat safety plan and don't push through.

Energy drinks vs electrolyte drinks

Lots of tradies grab an energy drink or a sugary sports drink from the servo. Energy drinks are built around caffeine and sugar, not hydration. Sugary sports drinks give you sodium, but often with a lot of sugar per bottle, which isn't ideal if you're drinking several a day. A low sugar drink with electrolytes gives you the sodium without the sugar load. Read more in natural electrolytes vs sports drinks.

What to look for in a work drink

  • Sodium on the label
  • Low or no added sugar, because you'll drink more than one
  • Nothing artificial
  • Ready to drink from the esky, no mixing
  • Tastes good cold

FAQ

How much water should a tradie drink in the heat?

It depends on the heat, the work and how much you sweat. A good habit is a few mouthfuls every 15 to 20 minutes in hot conditions, plus extra at breaks. Follow your workplace heat guidelines.

Do tradies need electrolytes?

On hot days or heavy sweating days, they're worth considering. Water alone replaces fluid, but electrolytes replace the sodium lost in sweat.

Are energy drinks good for hydration on site?

Energy drinks are designed around caffeine and sugar, not hydration. A drink with electrolytes and low or no added sugar is a better fit for staying hydrated.
