Search for an Australian made electrolyte drink and you'll find retailer listings, powders, tablets and labels that all seem to wave the flag a little differently. Australian made. Product of Australia. Australian owned. Made from local and imported ingredients. They sound alike, but they mean different things. Here's a plain-English guide to what each one means on a drink, how to check a label in about twenty seconds, and an honest look at where Uthrive fits.
The short answer
- Australian made means the product was made here. Its essential character was created in Australia, not just packed or relabelled.
- Product of Australia is a stricter claim. The significant ingredients come from Australia and almost all of the processing happens here.
- Australian owned is about the business, not the factory. It tells you who owns the brand and where the profits and decisions stay. It says nothing about where the drink is made.
Uthrive is Australian owned. Our new range, landing in 2027, is made in Thailand, with real salt from Lake Deborah in Western Australia in every can. That's why you'll see us say Australian owned, not Australian made.
What "Australian made" means on a drink
Country of origin claims in Australia sit under the Australian Consumer Law, and the ACCC is the body that looks after them. As a general rule, a "made in Australia" claim needs the product to have been substantially transformed here. Mixing, bottling or canning a drink from local and imported ingredients can count. Simply repacking or relabelling something made overseas doesn't.
The green and gold kangaroo you see on packs is the Australian Made logo. It's a certification trade mark, and brands need to meet its rules and be licensed before they can use it. If you see it, the business has signed up to those rules.
Food and drink also have their own country of origin labelling standard. Some foods must show the kangaroo with a bar chart of how much is Australian. Many drinks, including soft drinks and sports drinks, generally only need a clear text statement such as "Made in Australia from local and imported ingredients" or "Made in Thailand". So the absence of a bar chart on an electrolyte drink is normal.
Australian made vs Australian owned vs Product of Australia
| Claim | What it tells you | What it doesn't |
|---|---|---|
| Product of Australia | Major ingredients and processing are Australian. | Who owns the brand. |
| Australian made | The drink was made here, from local or imported ingredients. | Where the ingredients came from, or who owns the brand. |
| Australian owned | The business is owned in Australia, so profits and decisions stay here. | Where the drink is made. |
None of these is better or worse on its own. Plenty of big drinks are made in Australia by companies owned overseas, and plenty of small Aussie brands make overseas. The point is knowing which claim you're reading.
Why Australian owned matters to a lot of people
When you buy from an Australian owned brand, the money goes to a business based here. For a small independent brand, that's the difference between a new flavour, another stockist or a local event sponsorship, and not.
Uthrive started on the job, not in a boardroom. Danny Burnett, our founder, is a full-time firefighter. Long shifts in hot turnout gear left him looking for a simple, natural drink in the fridge, and he couldn't find one. So between shifts he built his own. There's no big drinks company behind us, just a firefighter, his family and a crew of people who back us. You can read the full story on our story page.
Where Uthrive fits, honestly
- Australian owned and independent. Built by a firefighter, owned here.
- An Australian ingredient at the heart of it. Every can uses real salt from Lake Deborah, an ancient salt lake in Western Australia. It's where our electrolytes start. Read more in Lake Deborah salt in Uthrive.
- Made in Thailand. Our new range is made in Thailand, in a factory fitted with solar panels. We explain how and why on our Made Right page.
- Why Thailand? In 2026 Uthrive was selected by CSIRO for the Thailand-Australia Venture Exchange Program. Making in Thailand helps us take an Australian owned brand into Asia, starting with a Thailand launch in 2027.
- No borrowed flags. We won't call the new range Australian made, because it isn't. We'd rather be clear and let the ingredients do the talking.
How to check any drink's label in 20 seconds
- Find the origin statement. It's usually near the ingredients or the nutrition panel.
- Read the exact words. "Made in", "Product of", "Packed in" and "Australian owned" are four different claims.
- Look for the official logo. The kangaroo in a triangle is licensed; a flag or map graphic isn't the same thing.
- Then read the ingredients anyway. Origin doesn't tell you how much sodium, sugar or sweetener is inside. Our guide to what is in an electrolyte drink walks you through it.
What matters most is what's in the can
Where a drink is made and who owns it are fair things to care about. So is what you're actually drinking. If you want everyday hydration, check the sodium per serve, whether there's added sugar, and whether it relies on sweeteners. We compare the main options in the best electrolyte drinks in Australia, explain the labels in sugar free electrolyte drinks and electrolyte drinks without artificial sweeteners, and weigh up formats in electrolyte powder vs ready to drink.

Lake Deborah, an ancient salt lake in Western Australia. It's the source of the sodium in every can.
